“His Royal Badness” – 1958 – 2016

I have never been a huge Prince fan in the first place and now he has passed away and hearing his music on a high rotation on the radio stations, I realize that I might have not made enough effort to listen to his music and appreciate it. This might sound a bit hypocritical, but doesn’t it often work like that unfortunately? However, I always thought there’s no doubt he is/was a great artist and an absolute genius with his very own sound! He was an inspiration for many artists and a very talented Songwriter and Multi-instrumentalist. Despite his tiny posture, he had ton’s of Sex-appeal and he was surrounded by the most beautiful women. He had something mysterious and we don’t know much about him because he hardly did any interviews and he never spoke about his private life.

Facts: Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He won seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the first year of his eligibility. Rolling Stone ranked Prince at number 27 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

When I heard the news of his passing, I felt sad another icon in pop music had gone at such a young age. Therefore I decided that with this article I wanted to dedicate a small tribute to him with a few of my favorite Prince songs.

Although songs like Purple Rain, 1999, Raspberry Baret, Let’s go crazy, When Doves cry, U got the Look are his biggest commercial successes, I prefer songs that are a bit less famous. ” I want to be your lover” always have been my most favourite Prince song, which has a real disco/funky sound. Furthermore I prefer his more jazzy and funky songs and songs from the period he was still working together with the Revolution, Wendy & Lisa were part of. What I like is that some of these songs are unpredictable in the way they develop and that’s what make them interesting for me. Also the way he made use of his background singers is great. Sometimes it seems they sing out of tune, but of course this is done on purpose and what’s giving those songs something extra special.

His music will live on forever. May he Rest In Peace!
